Introduction

The mechanical characteristics of bone are its rigidity and its strenghth.  See AO principles

When a mechanical force is applied to bone it is difficult to deform and this is the charcateristic of rigidity.

When The chartacteristic of rigidity is defined as is characterized by its lack of deformity under mechanical forces, and its strenghth ie its ability to tolerate high lods without failing.

The mineral components provide rigidity for the bone, while the collagen provides resiliency.  The periosteum with its vascularity plays a pivotal role in healing.
